When it comes to self esteem it is essential to understand just how important it is to your mental health. Simply put, it is the confidence that you feel in your sense of self and the pieces that compose your identity. Elements such as cultural identity, ethnicity or sexual identity can influence self-esteem as well.
While low self esteem can have a variety of causes, it generally shows up as a tendency to hide yourself from others. From securing a high-paying job at all costs to literally not leaving the house, low self esteem can leave you wanting to be invisible or looking to external elements to justify your worth. In any case, low self esteem can leave you feeling isolated from others and uncomfortable at the prospect of letting others see the real you. Research has indicated that low self esteem can often lead to feelings of depression.
